You could say that I worked every minute of my life, or you could say with equal precision that I never worked a day. I have always subscribed to the expression, "Thank God it's Friday," because to me Friday means I can work the next two days without interruption.

Do It While You Can

April 23, 2003

Jude, my sweet wife, has died.

So far as we all knew, she was in perfect health: strong in body, buoyant in spirit. But two weeks ago, while out taking a quiet walk at dawn, she had a heart attack and died instantly.

Needless to say, I have barely begun to digest this loss. There will be time enough for that.

In the meantime I gain comfort from many things. Jude lives on in our two wonderful kids, aged 11 and 9. The love of family and friends envelops us. And I have the knowledge that, for the last twenty years, we didn't just talk about it; we did it.

What do I mean by that? Well, Jude and I did our best to design our lives around the things that really matter for us. Bit by bit, we changed course professionally, aligning our working lives with our core values and passions. For the last decade, we have both been based at home, sharing the joys and responsibilities of work and parenting.

Are there things that we didn't get around to doing? Sure. But at least we made the things that really matter the foundation of our daily lives.

Thank God we did. I hate to think how I would be feeling today if we had procrastinated.

Life hangs by a thin thread. Procrastinate at your peril.
